This project is for the Bilateral Core programme of the Academy of Finland (AF) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2010 for the development of "the future of living". More precisely, we propose a joint research project between Aalto University, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), Tokyo Denki University, and National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan, with the subject of improving the quality of medical treatment and daily healthcare scenes using wireless communications and networks.

The primary objective of this project is development of scientific foundation using which wireless networks in medical and daily healthcare scenes are designed and validated. The particular emphasis is laid on radio channel modelling because it is the most unknown but important block of wireless systems. Two scenarios are covered: one is in a hospital environment and another is daily life environment, mainly in indoor home scenarios. For the hospital environment the goals of our research is

  1. To acquire knowledge of radio channel propagation in a hospital environments by means of both simulations and measurements;
  2. To develop channel models that cover hospital environments in particular, e.g., surgery and inspection rooms; and finally,
  3. To develop a tool that allows design of reliable wireless applications in hospital environments, e.g., in surgery and ultrasonic imaging.

For the daily healthcare scenario, the goals are set as follows

  1. To establish a framework for analyzing the on]body channels, e.g., development of simulation environment incorporating supercomputers and full]body numerical human body model;
  2. To establish a methodology to separate antenna effects from propagation, and to analyze radio channel behaviour in relation to the motion of a human body
  3. To develop a wideband directional on]body channel model and its validation against simulated and measured on]body channels..
